The Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN), founded in 1968, is a registered member of the International Union of Soil Science.  The Society aims at promoting and fostering understanding of basic and applied Soil Science in Nigeria.  The Society also strives to enhance the dissemination of knowledge in all aspects of Soil Science and shares ideas with national and international societies through conferences, symposia, lectures, seminars and journal publications.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC), on behalf of the Executive Committee on SSSN is pleased to invite you to the 36^th Annual Conference of the Society which is scheduled to take place from 12^th to 16^th March, 2012 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.  The opening ceremony will take place at PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM.

CONFERENCE THEME:

CLIMATE CHANGE, SOIL MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVES AND SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION

The impact of climate change on the capacity of soil resources to sustain food production and achieve the Millennium Development Goals 1 and 7 (Poverty/Hunger Alleviation and Environmental Protection) is a major challenge to Nigeria.  Several scientific and socio-economic studies aimed at developing soil management alternatives and sustainable food production had been undertaken by experts.  The 36^th Annual Conference of Soil Science Society of Nigeria is  therefore aimed at providing a platform for Soil Scientists, policy makers and interested professionals/stakeholders to present and discuss the results of their researches and proffer solutions to the challenges of climate change to food security in Nigeria.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS/PAPERS

• The Conference LOC invites abstracts and papers from Soil Scientist, Agronomist, Geographers, Biologists, Chemists, Environmentalists, Agric Economists/Extensionists and Scientists in other related fields for platform/oral and poster presentation.  Submitted articles must be based on original works in any area of the stated theme and sub-themes.  Papers presented at the conference will be peer-reviewed, and good quality articles will be published in the Book of Proceedings.
• Abstract(s) of not more than 300 words and paper(s) prepared to conform to the “Guidelines to Authors” of the Nigerian Journal of Soil Science should be submitted electronically as an attachment to:  sssnloc2012@unn.edu.ng and ssnloc2012@yahoo.com.  Please indicate if your submission is for oral or poster presentation.
• Abstract(s) should be submitted not later than 31^st December 2011 and full paper(s) on or before 31^st January 2012.  Please note that submissions later than the deadlines will NOT be considered for presentation.
• Authors whose articles are accepted for presentation will be notified and consequently expected to bring to the conference, three hard copies of the manuscript(s) on A4  size paper, prepared using Microsoft work 2003  2007  version, font size 12, double line spacing, and Times New Roman character.  A CD copy of the manuscript(s) is also expected from the authors.  Please note that ONLY the papers presented at the conference will be published in the conference proceedings.  Oral presentation MUST be on well prepared power point.
• Corresponding authors should be indicated with appropriate e-mail address.
• Posters will be displayed at the poster stands and authors are expected to stand-by and respond to questions on their posters.
