FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
THEME: Soil Science, Environmental Management, and Food Security

PREAMBLE The Soil Science Society of Nigeria (SSSN), founded in 1968, is a registered member of the International Union of Soil Science. The Society aims at promoting and fostering better understanding of basic and applied Soil Science in Nigeria. The Society also strives to enhance dissemination of knowledge in all aspects of Soil Science and share ideas with National and International Societies through conferences, symposia, lectures, seminars and journal publications. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) on behalf of the Executive Committee of the SSSN, is pleased to announce and invite you to the 37th Annual Conference of the Society tagged “Lafia 2013” which is scheduled to take place from 11th – 15th March, 2013 at the prestigious Ta’al Conference Hotel, Jos Road, Lafia,Nasarawa State.

The attainment of Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), particularly Goal 1 (Poverty/Hunger Alleviation) and Goal 7 (Environmental Protection), and New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) sectoral priorities: Agriculture and the Environment, by 2015 remains a major challenge for Nigeria. There is no gainsaying the fact that Soil Scientists have an important role to play in tackling this challenge through research towards the development of sustainable land use systems National Soil Information System and appropriate land management technologies. The aim of the 37th Annual Conference of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria is to provide an enabling platform for Nigerian Soil Scientists, interested stakeholders and policy makers to discuss these serious contemporary issues as captured in the Conference theme and sub-themes.

CALL FOR PAPERS

• The Conference Organizing Committee invites all interested Soil Scientists, Agronomists, Geographers, Biologists, Chemists, Environmentalists, Agric Economists / Extensionists, etc to submit papers based on their original works in any area of the stated theme and sub-themes for oral or poster presentation. • Preparation of the manuscript should conform with the “Guidelines to Authors” of the Nigerian Journal of Soil Science. • Reviewed, presented and accepted technical papers from the conference will be published in the Book of Proceedings. Each accepted poster presentation will be displayed at the venue. However, formal poster presentation will not be allowed but the presenter will be available to respond to questions. Posters may be published. • Abstracts should be submitted on or before 31st December, 2012 and full papers on or before 31st January, 2013. Any submission that is received by the LOC later than these deadlines will only be considered for poster presentation. • Abstracts and full papers should be sent by e-mail attachment to: sssnlafia2013@nsuk.edu.ng or sssnlafia2013@gmail.com
